About Lanzarote

Lanzarote

The Canary Islands were also known once as “The Fortunate Islands”. This is simply because the weather is as near to perfection as possible. Located in The Atlantic, just 72 miles from the Saharan coast of Africa, Lanzarote enjoys all year round sun, with the temperature rarely falling below 14 degrees on a midwinter night and rarely above 30 degrees on a mid summer day.

Lanzarote is a starkly beautiful product of volcanic eruptions, offering stunning mountain, volcano and sea views. The island is 77 kilometres long and one is never far from the sea.

Annexed by Spain in the 15th Century, the island is part of Spain, but has a fiercely independent streak. We enjoy the benefit of EU membership, but we also have our own low taxation system as well as duty free status.

Lanzarote

Modern day Lanzarote has a population of around 120,000, with a high proportion of foreigners resident. There are about 10,000 British citizens living permanently on the island. A large part of our income is derived from tourism, with more than 1.2 million visitors each year. The island’s Cabildo (parliament) has striven for decades to create a sustainable tourism, resisting the urge to go down the “High Rise” route used in places such as The Costa Del Sol. Much of this work can be attributed to Cesár Manrique, Lanzarote’s most famous son.

The island has three main resorts:

Costa Teguise

A family resort, and also very popular as a wind surfing and diving location. The King of Spain has a holiday home here. Costa Teguise offers easy access to Arrecife and the airport, and also has the island’s only golf course and Aquapark.

Carnival

Puerto Del Carmen

The original resort, with the world renowned Atlantic Centre for night clubs and dancing. Puerto Del Carmen has eight kilometres of golden, sandy beaches, bars and restaurants.

Playa Blanca

The island’s newest resort, offering a more upmarket experience, with larger villas and a fabulous marina, as well as the famous Papagayo Beaches.
