Location

This magnificent building, known today as the PALACIO DEL MARQUÉS, was finished in 1455 after taking 32 years to build, making it one the oldest buildings in Lanzarote. It was the head quarters of the Canarian government for 270 years as well as serving other purposes. Today the wonderful PALACIO, it's colorful courtyards, private rooms and secret passage ways, has become a Mecca for wine experts as well as those interested in history.

A reminder of the past history of the house is the love letter chiselled out of the magma stone in a room by MACIOT DE BETHENCOURT and dedicated to the Princess of TEGUISE, the daughter of the last Guanche king. There is a secret meeting hall underneath the PALACIO (old craftsmen, who helped to renovate spoke about it very excited because they played in the hall when they were children). The inhabitants would flee into this underground room when pirates attacked in order to reach safety in the Castillo Santa Barbara by means of a tunnel.
La Villa de Teguise was the original capital of Lanzarote and is full of history and charm with cobbled streets and terracotta tiled roofs. Offering breathtaking views from its elevated position and the place comes alive on Sundays with the famous market.
